Designing with metals: selecting the right louvers or screens
Course Number: ESM-202
Course Credits: 1-Hour LU / HSW
This course covers the fundamentals of metal Architectural Louver and Architectural Screen (perforated metal)
systems, emphasizing the differences between each assembly, and how they can harmoniously fit within a
community aesthetic while also contributing to the overall performance of a building.
The benefits and disadvantages of these methods will be compared and examined, with a focus on where best
to use them, and how to ensure they meet the performance and code requirements for a building.
Sustainability issues are addressed, by using highly recycled and recyclable metals, and strategies to use
natural ventilation in garages, reduction of materials for plumbing sprinklers when appropriate, and weather
protection.
Discussion will also include the many potential design options available for Architectural Louver and
Architectural Screen systems that enhance both form and function. Included are types of finishes available, the
shape, size and placement of blades in a louver system, with their effect the performance of the louver panels,
and the shape, size and placement of cutouts/perforations on screen panels and effect on performance.
Manufacturing and installation considerations will also be discussed. The course will review relevant building
codes, standards, and testing protocols in terms of air infiltration, water infiltration, wind, hurricane impact,
and acoustic considerations.
